Taco place: Mexico

Tuesday, August 14, 2012

I love soft shell tacos, but there aren't many places in New Zealand that have them. Most Mexican places offer only hard shell variants. This new Mexican place, simply called Mexico (and across the road from 'China', haha) in Downtown Auckland, is a new favourite place of the locals.
Open from 12pm every day, you'll be lucky if you get a place straight away each evening. It doesn't matter if it's a weekday or a weekend, the place is always crowded and the waiting list long. There's no way around it, because they don't take bookings, either!
You'll see why once you step in and see the interior. Dark red-lit walls are filled with memorabilia from Mexico - a lot of Frida Kahlo and Dia de los Muertos influence. I love the colourfulness of the Mexican culture!
Even though it was a beautiful day outside, T and I decided to sit inside so we could be enveloped in by the clattered interior.
It was time for beer and taco - at 4 in the afternoon!
Their menu is 80% drinks, and only 20% small meals, though they do have meals of the day on a blackboard as well. I was here for only one type of eats, though, so I didn't mind.
Instead of a Mexican cerveza, we got a MOA instead, a Kiwi beer that I'd been craving.
Taco of the day: Pumpkin, queso fresco, smoked paprika flakes. A little spicy hot. At $6, it's not cheap, but the size was bigger than I'd expected. There are five different kinds of soft shell tacos on offer, so you bet I shall come back and try them all!
