1T butter and 1T flour whisk in a pan
Add 250g milk
Also nutmeg, (dijon mustard,) to season.
This is your Beaujolais?! sauce.
6 slices of white bread, crusts off
Flatten, coat bread with butter
Place into muffin try
In goes: (ham), egg, 1T sauce, grated cheese - gruyere or compte
Brush with butter
Bake at 180 degrees C for 15 minutes.

I have a new favourite cooking 'celebrity'. Her name is Rachel Khoo, and she lives in Paris. A Brit, younger than Jamie Oliver and as retro but in a tinier kitchen than Nigella, she has just recently done her first season with BBC. I have been watching it regularly online for a while, scribbling down her recipes to be tried later.
After pushing open all my windows and doors to the deck area for fresh air to enter, some old French music on to block out the neighbours who are going at it again...

I didn't get called into work today so I have a lot of time on hand. Going to force myself to go for a walk outside. Being cooped up inside just because it's cold is not the best option, really!

Instead they are trying to make it harder to live our day to day lives as they tighten the terms of tertiary loans. This is not the better future they promise, if higher education will get harder to reach. We students are struggling as it is!
Help us to get a decent uni degree first. Perhaps you will have to work on career advising for high school students to inform them of more varied tertiary choices, so we won't wander lost at uni forever; create more jobs for the graduates, so we will want to graduate, earn real money, and live real lives. Your tightening of government purse strings will not be doing this country any service...

Lovely catch up with hometown friends over a bottle of red wine and tapas dishes.
A bread platter with olive dips inspired by Van Gogh's les oliviers, and a pot of bluecorn chamomile tea. :)
My open sandwich had the biggest mushrooms ever, with chipotle sauce hidden somewhere down the bottom. I got my affogato I had wanted all week long.
I am so excited it's the weekend finally, which means that I have finished all my assignments, at last! :D
Another cake bake! The rainy weather outside is not tempting to get out in, at all. Staying in until I get this last (!!!) essay finished in time for tonight's Fairtrade debate at uni. Hope there will be a decent turn out. :)

After a little more than a week, green tips started appearing. After that, there's been no stopping them. Every day they have grown like monsters.

C: You were taking ages in the pool changing room so I had to wait for you. Then you went out without me because you hadn't realised I was waiting. I went out after you and got on a bus without you.
C: We got on a wrong bus and had to get back, but we were lost. We went into this building thinking it'd be a short cut. We had the choice of this building and the steepest hill ever, you see. Like that Balwyn street in Dunedin, the world's steepest street according to the Guinness book of records. But the building turned out to be this weird religious temple and they wanted us to be one of the them and wouldn't let us out. They were coming after us to make us join them, them in creamy white flowing dress gowns and all with colourful masks, one which looked like the vampire from the Sesame Street.
It gave me the creeps and I just wanted to wake up!

My birthday happens to fall on the last day of Fair Trade Fortnight this year.
Fair Trade is a cause I have been taking interest in lately (we are trying to make the University of Auckland the first Fair Trade uni in NZ), and it'd be great if you could get to know it more, too.

Most of you are coffee/chocolate drinkers, so the next time you are at a cafe, think to choose the fair trade option this week, for my sake if not for the farmers in the developing countries. Also bananas. And any other products available where you live :)

Zucchini are a new vegetable that I came to love more and more in the recent years. I wish they came in bigger sizes!
It's a drizzling day today and I don't feel like going outside.. I'm passing time watching cooking videos on YouTube instead, and then I realised I probably should have some lunch!
As a little lunch treat:
* Slice the zucchini in half lengthwise.
* Scoop out the centre seedy part.
* Brush with (crushed garlic, olive oil, salt and pepper) mixture.
* Place in small tomato pieces.
* Bake for 30 minutes at 175 degrees.
(I didn't have any bread crumbs to didn't add any. If you want to, feel free to do so.)
* Sprinkle with cheese, bake some more until bubbly and golden.
* Drizzle with olive oil and more cheese.
Enjoy!

Dukkah is an Egyptian side dish consisting of bread and dip. You dip the bread in olive oil first, then into the pounded nut and spice mixture. I love the little brown dish the nuts came in.
Tortilla espanola is of course a Spanish tapas dish that I really like.
The guys working here are really starting to expect me every week now. As I walked in tonight they were like, 'Perfect timing!' Haha, I always seem to get there around 9, apparently.

Mum is visiting us for a few days and with her around there is no shortage of things to eat. My goodness, she is fattening us up hard! Between spending time with her and trying to write the wretched essays at the same time, it is hard to find time to blog posts. So here is just a quick one to tell you what I have been up to, in case you were wondering. I cannot wait for the end of the week!
Okay, finally! This post has been on my to do list since January this year. It's taken me four months to get onto baking them, and they definitely aren't as pretty as the ones in the original post I got the inspiration from, but my tiny ugly blueberry tarts are better tasting than they look.. Because sometimes one shouldn't judge a book by its covers. In any case, how can anything with blueberries taste anything but yummy? ..Unless they are over baked and get a bit brown.. Which I have the tendency to let happen these days, haha..
Actually, they were pretty sweet. Think I may have added too much honey. Tiny little thing to calm my sister's sweet cravings for the night. :)
This is surely the busiest month of the semester for me. I'm sorry to the loving people around me who have been - and probably will for a little while longer - putting up with my tantrums and tired haziness while I try to sort out myself on writing these never ending essays that have decided to be due all on the same day! We're going to be okay. We're going to be okay. Just hurry up and start writing already, Viv!!!
As I was having dinner tonight, segments of my dream last night appeared before me. Of backstages and mazes of stairs. Orchestra and lots of girls from my high school days. Stage frights and excitements. Ha.
A real Spanish tapas dinner: calamares fritas, patatas bravas, tortilla espanola, with half a litre of cool red Sangria. Quick light dinner between three girls with much catching up to do. Lovely evening :)
That was last week. Tuesday night. Guess what. I went back there again last night after church for dessert supper with friends. Haha. I might take mum here this week for Mother's day :)
